Education & Support for Caregivers

Caring for a loved one often raises questions about safety and support. Our caregiver education sessions provide practical guidance in safe transfers, mobility, and the use of home equipment.

Supporting Caregivers in Daily Routines

Caring for a loved one often means helping with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or mobility. Without proper guidance, these tasks can place physical strain on caregivers and increase risk of injury. Occupational therapy caregiver education provides personalized training to ensure care is safe, effective, and sustainable.

Sessions may cover:

  • Safe transfer techniques (bed, chair, toilet, and car).

  • Use of equipment such as walkers, grab bars, or transfer benches.

  • Joint protection and body mechanics to reduce caregiver strain.

  • Fall prevention and energy conservation strategies.

  • Communication approaches to support clients with cognitive changes.

Why It Matters

Being a caregiver can be both rewarding and demanding. Proper education reduces the risk of injury, promotes client independence, and helps caregivers feel confident in their role. With the right tools and strategies, caregiving becomes safer and less overwhelming, improving quality of life for both client and caregiver.

What to Expect

Education and support sessions are tailored to the caregiver’s needs and the client’s daily routines. Training may take place in the home environment to ensure strategies are practical and realistic. Caregivers receive demonstrations, hands-on practice, and written recommendations to guide them after the session.

Service Area:

Supporting clients across the Ottawa region (Gloucester, Vanier, Kanata, and Barrhaven) and surrounding Eastern Ontario communities like Finch, Winchester, Crysler, and Arnprior.
