Home Safety Recommendations: OT Tips for Preventing Falls and Staying Independent
Keywords: fall prevention, home safety assessment, occupational therapist tips
Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, but many can be prevented with simple, practical changes at home. These five OT-recommended strategies can significantly reduce fall risks and help you stay safe and independent:
1. Improve lighting
Ensure all hallways, entrances, stairs, and bathrooms are well lit. Poor lighting makes it difficult to see obstacles or changes in flooring. Use nightlights in bedrooms and hallways to reduce the risk of nighttime falls.
2. Install Grab Bars Around the Bathroom
Grab bars offer crucial support in areas where falls are most likely. Place them near the toilet and inside the shower or tub to assist with safe, stable transfers during personal care tasks.
3. Remove Throw Rugs
Rugs that shift or bunch up are a common tripping hazard. Remove them, or secure them with non-slip backing to ensure a safer walking surface throughout the home.
4. Declutter Walkways
Clear walkways of cords, furniture, and clutter. An open layout makes it easier to move through your home safely, especially if you're using a cane or walker.
5. Wear Supportive, Non-Slip Footwear
Choose shoes with a solid sole and strong grip that stay securely on your feet. Avoid loose sandals or any footwear that might slide off or shift while walking.
